** Dale
Gaskin paid a visit to the Johnson's Mills Nature Conservancy interpretive
centre and area on Sunday in the 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. time window. The tide was not
in close, however, Dale described the action as awesome, some of the best he has
ever witnessed. Even though the tide was out, large areas of the beach had
roosting shorebirds in large numbers, as well as in the creeks. There were
flocks making very impressive flypasts. Two BALD EAGLES [Aigle à tête blanche]
were present but the sandpipers paid little attention to
them.
Dale's Dawson Settlement yard seems to have legions of RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRDS [Colibri à gorge rubis] at the moment and going through 30 ounces
of nectar a day.
** ATLANTIS FRITILLARY [Argynne de l'Atlantique] butterflies are
apparently in their active flight period. Aldo Dorio got a photo of one
nectaring on Joe-pye-weed in Malpac. I as well came across one in Sillikers
that appeared a bit worn. Aldo's appears quite fresh.
** More on the BLACK SWALLOWTAIL [Papillon à céleri] rearing
projects. I have noted that the chrysalises darken just before the butterflies
are about to emerge. I photographed one on Saturday morning where the chrysalis
shell is becoming translucent and the spots of the butterfly can be seen through
the skin of the chrysalis.
** A bit of a head's up for folks who have their favorite CHANTERELLE
[Chanterelle commune] mushroom sites tagged. I noted one of mine was flush with
fresh specimens on Saturday, so it may be time to check them out if they have
not produced already.
