** Brian Coyle spotted a WASP [guêpe] take
a large insect as prey, taking it in midair, and it landed on a glass window
where it quickly devoured it. It is that time of year when the Vespidae group
of wasps can be very aggressive (meat and sweet eaters), very unlike bumblebees
and domestic bees that seek out only pollen and nectar.
** Aldo Dorio photographed an adult,
male MERLIN [Faucon émerillon] at Hay Island on Wednesday. The grey/blue mantle
suggests male and adult. The breast striping is always vertically oriented in
both adult and juvenile. Aldo also photographed a very freshly emerged
JEM-STUDDED PUFFBALL MUSHROOM with a few very small ones breaking through
beside it. All the puffballs are edible except the Pigskin Poison Puffball
which has a thick brown skin when fresh and when cut open is almost always
black. Aldo got a close up of this mushroom to show the detail that we don’t
often see this way.
